Dermal fillers are a type of cosmetic treatment used to add volume, smooth wrinkles and fine lines, and enhance facial contours. They are injectable substances that are typically used in the face to restore a more youthful appearance.

Dermal Fillers are the injection of Hyaluronic acid which naturally occurs in the skin. Hyaluronic acid hydrates and stimulates fibroblasts (the cells that produce collagen and elastin), adding volume, shaping facial contours and smoothing facial wrinkles and folds.

Dermal Fillers can be used to treat:
1. Cheek Augmentation: Cheek Augmentation is the use of dermal fillers to improve cheekbone definition – thus, restoring projection and lift.
2. Marionette Lines: Marionette Lines are lines which form at the corners of the mouth due to loss of collagen and elastin in skin. These lines radiate outwards and extend down to the chin, giving the mouth a sad, down-turned appearance.
3. Lip Enhancement: Lip Enhancement is the use of a hyaluronic acid-based dermal filler to correct the volume loss in lips that occurs with ageing. The lip filler also accentuates contour and hydrates the lip.

4. Chin Augmentation: Chin Augmentation is the use of dermal fillers to strengthen and define the jaw line in males. It also describes the use of fillers to restore length/width of the chin in males and females.
5. Nasolabial Folds (Nose‐to‐Mouth Lines) Nasolabial Folds are the creases which form between the corner of the nose and the angle of the mouth due to the loss of connective tissue support and fat pad descent. These folds can become quite deep with increasing age.

Can I have Dermal
Filler Treatments?
  • You must be over 18 years old
  • You must not be pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You should be in general good health and should have realistic expectations of the outcome
  • Patients with bleeding disorders may not be suited for dermal filler treatments
  • New patients require a face‐to‐face consultation, where they will be informed of all options, risks and complications of the procedure
  • Patients with an active cold sore are not suited for dermal filler treatment in the lip

Local anaesthetic in dermal fillers decreases the discomfort during injection. Treatment effect is immediate.

The results can last up to 4–18 months, depending on type of filler used and the area treated.

All treatments are associated with some level of risk, and some of the complications may be permanent.

The commonest side effects are bruising, swelling, tenderness, itching and redness.

In rare cases, Dermal Fillers can block a blood vessel – leading to tissue death, permanent blindness or stroke.

Some people may not wish to undergo Dermal Filler treatments.

The alternative therapies include, but are not limited to, wrinkle reducing treatments, dermabrasion, medical-grade peels, prescription-strength vitamin A products, lasers and surgery. There is also the option of embracing your wrinkles and folds, doing nothing to alter their appearance.

Before Dermal
Filler Treatments
Consultation with our medical doctor is required prior to treatment. All the options for treatment, as well as the risks and complications of Dermal Filler Treatments that will be discussed with you in detail to ensure informed consent.
Do not consume alcohol 24 hours prior to treatment, as this may increase the risk of bruising. It is advisable to have treatment at least 2 weeks before any special event to allow swelling or bruising to subside.
